The specimen is sandwiched between two polarizing plates,and one of the polarizing plates is rotated by a motor-driven precision rotating stage. The extinction ratio of the light passed through the specimen is measured by accurately measuring the maximum value and minimum value of the quantity of transmitted light from a constant quantity of light stable luminance surface.
